Mead produced by Metsiederei Eckert wins gold

Zofingen/Krakow - Hungg, a mead made by Metsiederei Eckert, has been named as the winner of the MeadMadnessCup 2025 in the category of Traditional Sweet Mead. This world’s largest mead competition took place in the Polish city of Krakow as part of the European Meadmakers Conference.

(CONNECT) The Metsiederei Eckert, a mead brewing firm owned by Alexander Eckert, has won a gold medal at the MeadMadnessCup 2025 in recognition of its mead named “Hungg”. According to a press release, the 92-strong jury of international experts evaluated a record number of more than 850 meads this year, which came from a total of 24 countries. The jury selected Hungg, made by the brewery based in Zofingen in the canton of Aargau, as the winner of the Traditional Sweet Mead category.

The competition is the largest of its kind in the world. It took place February 27-28 as part of the European Meadmakers Conference in Krakow, with the winners then announced on March 1.

The award-winning mead is made from 100 percent Swiss honey from dark bees produced by Imkerei Soland, a beekeeping company from Twann in the canton of Bern. According to the information, the meticulous production process behind Hungg started back in June 2017. After fermentation, the mead was matured for nine months in a Swiss oak barrique specially made by Küferei Suppiger, a barrel maker based in Küsnacht in the canton of Schwyz, before being placed into a steel tank for another year. After this, the Hungg was bottled, where it underwent further gentle in-bottle fermentation.

“This prize”, Eckert explains, “is a huge honor and serves as recognition of our efforts to create top quality mead using regional ingredients on the basis of traditional craftmanship”. With his mead brewery founded twelve years ago, Eckert is a member of the small producer cooperation WOHL, an association of small businesses that place an emphasis on sustainable and regional practices in food production. ce/mm
