Axpo to continue its policy of forgoing Russian uranium

Baden - The energy provider Axpo is opting not to procure fuel supplies from Russian companies for its nuclear power plants in Beznau and Leibstadt. From 2026, the nuclear fuel uranium will be sourced from Canada and Kazakhstan. To this end, new contracts have now been concluded.

(CONNECT) The energy provider Axpo has agreed new delivery contracts to supply its two nuclear power plants in Beznau and Leibstadt, both of which are located in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland. The company writes in a press release that it has moved to diversify its fuel supply in order to avoid using Russian suppliers in future.

Axpo states that it “decided to stop concluding new contracts with Russian suppliers across the group” immediately after Russia launched its war of aggression against Ukraine. Owing to the reserves held at Leibstadt and Beznau, these two nuclear power plants have not relied on Russian sources for fuel supplies since 2022.

The revised procurement strategy will now result in fuel supplies being sourced from uranium mining companies based in Canada and Kazakhstan from 2026 onwards. This uranium will continue to be processed in France, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and the USA. “With the new contracts, Axpo is purchasing directly from the market leaders for the western market”, the company explains. ce/heg
