Axpo enters the Polish biogas market

Baden/Stare Ślepce - Axpo has acquired a biogas plant in Western Pomerania, Poland. The facility produces 6,640 megawatt hours of green electricity a year from agricultural waste. Poland is the fifth European country in which Axpo has a stake in the biogas market.

Axpo, based in Baden in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland, has entered the Polish biogas market by acquiring a biogas plant. According to a press release, Axpo purchased the facility in the village of Stare Ślepce in the Western Pomerania province from private shareholders. It generates 6,640 megawatt hours of electricity a year and also produces carbon-neutral organic fertilizer. Energy is acquired from 20,000 tons of agricultural substrates, which mostly comprise agricultural waste.

“Renewable gas is key to the decarbonization of the agricultural sector and the energy transition,” says Véronique Abrate, Axpo Group Head of Biogas International. She adds that Poland is “an interesting emerging market to which we have much to offer,” and says the company is planning further biogas projects in the country.

“Poland represents a large share of the European agricultural sector, making it an attractive market for developing projects using agricultural waste for the production of energy. It is also a sector that really does need to implement decarbonisation solutions,” says Grzegorz Biliński, Managing Director of Axpo in Poland.

By taking this step, the electricity supplier is stepping up its commitment to the European biogas market. According to the press release, Axpo is already “pioneering the development of biogas facilities” in Spain, Italy and Portugal. In Switzerland, Axpo operates 15 biogas plants for the production of renewable energy and nutrient-rich natural fertilizers and is an “industry leader in the dry fermentation of organic waste”. ce/heg
