Airborn Fuels Switzerland examining the viability of methanol-based kerosene

Zurich - Airborn Fuels Switzerland is carrying out a feasibility study for the production of synthetic kerosene on the basis of methanol. It forms the basis for the establishment of a platform for corresponding research and development activities. The project is being supported by the Canton of Aargau, among other backers.

Airborn Fuels Switzerland AG has commissioned the engineering and consulting company AFRY Switzerland with carrying out a feasibility study for the production of synthetic kerosene on the basis of methanol. The study is designed to serve as the basis for setting up a platform for corresponding research and development activities, as the Zurich-based company writes in a press release. The technology partner is Casale from Lugano in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland, a company that specializes in environmentally friendly solutions for the chemicals industry. Using the planned platform, Airborn Fuels Switzerland intends to “produce commercially viable quantities of eMethanol, part of which will then be used to produce eKerosene in a pilot plant”, as the company explains.

Airborn Fuels Switzerland aims to develop and promote sustainable solutions for the aviation industry. When it comes to kerosene, which is produced from methanol obtained from water and CO2 using electrical energy, the aviation sector remains in the starting blocks, according to the press release. The project and feasibility study have already received broad support from stakeholders active in the worlds of industry and science. For example, the Swiss Power-to-X Collaborative Innovation Network (SPIN) has been brought on board.

In the press release, Airborn Fuels Switzerland highlights the start-up financing it received from the canton of Aargau. For the canton, the planned demo facility represents an extension of the Reallabor Sisslerfeld, a living lab situated in the Fricktal region of the canton of Aargau. Here, research is carried out into innovations for energy and mobility. The innovative character of the project led by Airborn Fuels Switzerland also serves to strengthen Aargau’s reputation as the “energy canton of Switzerland”, as the company writes in the press release. ce/hs
